Sonic Boom
Last week I discovered that the thing I have been dreaming about for years has finally happened: Sonic has come to Minnesota.
I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since Jen Paddock took me to one in Denver several years ago (thanks girl - BFFs 4 EVAH!) and I experienced my very first Cherry Limeade with the #1 Sonic Burger Combo. Ever since that day I’ve been a Cherry Limeade junky, just twitching for a fix yet having to wait for my annual trip to Colorado.
That day came today, when Erica and I decided to brave the long lines during the lunch hour and order our first Minnesotan combo meals with Cherry Limeades. Our first step was to figure out how to get there. We had the address but after plugging it into Joan, my Garmin, we discovered that there must be some sort of cloaking devise hovering over the new Sonic because Joan couldn’t find it. We couldn’t even get directions through Mapquest and Yahoo Maps, so I decided to just head for I-94 while Erica messed around with my phone to see if she could somehow find a separate search engine to show us the way.
Once we managed to find it we discovered we would first need to go to the “Holding Area”, which was a block down the street from Sonic. It was here that we spoke with a Sonic attendant, verified that we were there to “drive up” rather than “drive through”, watched as the attendant placed a Sonic placard on my windshield, and then drove to the area of the parking lot designated for drive up customers.
We were even handed menus so we wouldn’t have to waste time figuring out what to order when we pulled up to the restaurant.
After only 10 minutes (I heard on the news that the lunch wait could last up to 40 minutes) we were given the signal from another Sonic attendant that there was a drive-in space available, so I pulled out of the holding area and swung into the Sonic parking area. I had to spend a few minutes chatting with the girl on the other end of the intercom because she seemed to have a tough time entering our order into the computer (I chose the same combo meal I ordered the very first time – the #1 Sonic Combo with Cherry Limeade and tots) but she seemed to get it in the end and all that was left for us was to wait for the attendant to bring our food and take our money.
And finally, that long awaited Cherry Limeade was mine. Pure heaven.
In hindsight, I don’t really recommend eating in the car (especially Erica – why did you wear white pants?) but I will savor that first taste of delicious cherry/lime goodness for a long time. Well, at least until I go back for another this weekend.

Nice pic...it definitely captures your elation.
I had my first sonic experience last month when I went with the guys to Denver. I must say I was impressed.
